What Nobody Tells You About Climbing Everest

The Hard Way to Everest

My cousin had flown in from the UK with a fixed number of days, the kind of constraint that foreign tourists carry with them when all they can manage is a momentary breathing space in the mountains before work comes calling again. We had planned to do the Everest Base Camp trek along with the three passes, which is either an ambitious itinerary or an optimistic one depending on how generously you read the weather forecasts around Lukla.

The Bus Goes to Ulleri Now

The day after I told everyone I would be going to Salleri and on to Lukla, I somehow ended up in Pokhara. Once I had made the decision. I realised that I did not really have a specific reason for wanting to go to Lukla in the first place. because the abandonment did not invite much guilt. The reality was I just wanted to move. Somewhere, anywhere. Two Days by the lake and the tourist capital of Nepal had already begun to bore me. The 'elsewhere' I was searching for could not be found in the cute little cafes, the bookshops, or the vibrancy of Lakeside. It required an ascent to higher altitudes. it required a trail.
